Science fiction

Earth is our home. We are struggling to look after it, so why should we even consider looking at a new home on another planet? I write stories about the homeless and surely their future should be prioritised over the exploration of space? Perhaps.

But we have learned much from our journey to the Moon, and surely we would learn even more from a journey to Mars. The pioneers would be living in a closed ecosystem, from the flight to the landing and for the duration of their stay. And if that journey forced us to develop such technology, perhaps we would better understand our own closed ecosystem: Earth.

Mars is our nearest neighbour and the subject of much current speculation. In ‘Seconders’ I have speculated what may confront a team of pioneers on a journey to colonise the red planet: the storms of dust and meteorites, the search for water and shelter. Perhaps the most dangerous thing we may encounter there is ourselves.

The Martian colonists are returning to Earth. Will anyone be there?

A second generation of colonists have arrived. They were born on the red planet and can truly call themselves Martians. One Martian, Leo, is curious about humanity’s home world and plans to return there after a planetary disaster. For him and his generation, going to Earth will be like encountering an alien world. It will be for the survivors of the first generation too.

Adam is the last human being, a clone of the last man sent into space over two and a half centuries ago, following Earth’s demise. He is a distant son.

While his AI guardians prepare for arrival at a habitable planet where humanity can be restarted, Adam is struggling to feel anything, let alone engage with The Mission. When the AIs present Adam with the next generation he is surprised to see twins, a boy and a girl, who stir unexpected emotions. While grappling with difficult questions about his own birth, he is amazed by the arrival of an alien life craft with one survivor: Iss. The AIs see her as a threat, while Adam sees a fellow soul in torment.

New series:

As the climate crisis deepens, so will inequality. There is huge potential for those with great wealth and imagination to help us. While Miles Ogunoye is struggling to grieve for his father he is presented with the opportunity to protect those threatened by the extremes of our rapidly changing weather. Ghina Ghulam, or GiGi to those closest to her, was born in Syria and knows all about loss and suffering. She also knows how to design fabulous rescue machines for Miles. Together they assemble a team with the potential to tackle catastrophes where our under-funded and over-stretched emergency services cannot.

Their initial optimism is challenged by their lack of rescue training, ungrateful survivors and cynical media. The team are forced to overcome their own personal traumas to save lives. Even of those who would bring them down.
